The Cooperatives are based on the values of mutual help, responsibility, democracy, equality, fairness and solidarity. Following the tradition of its founders, its members believe in the ethical values of honesty, transparency, social responsibility and concern for others.
|1. Open and voluntary membership|
|The Cooperatives are voluntary organisations open to anyone wishing to use their services and ready to accept the responsibilities involved in membership, without any discrimination on the grounds of gender, race, social class, or political/religious position.|
|2. Democratic control of members|
|Cooperatives are democratic organisations controlled by their members who participate actively in specifying their policies and in taking decisions. The men and women chosen to represent their Cooperative are answerable to the members. In the base Cooperatives the members all have the same voting rights (one member, one vote), while the Cooperatives on other levels are likewise organised along democratic lines.|
|3. The economic participation of the members|
|The members contribute on an equitable basis, and control the capital of the Cooperative in a democratic way. A part of this capital at least is the common property of the Cooperative. Members usually receive a limited compensation, where appropriate, on the capital subscribed as a condition of membership.
The members assign surpluses for any of the following purposes: the development of the Cooperative through the possible creation of reserves, of which at least one part has to remain indivisible; the profits for the members in proportion to the activities they carry out in the Cooperative; and the support of other activities as approved by the members.
|4. Autonomy and Independence|
|The Cooperatives are autonomous, mutual-assistance organisations, controlled by their members. If they enter into agreements with other organisations (including governments) or hold capital from external sources, they do so in terms that ensure democratic control by their members and which maintain the autonomy of the Cooperative.|
|5. Education, Training & Information|
|The Cooperatives provide their members, elected leaders, directors and employees with education and training to enable them to contribute effectively to the development of their Cooperatives. Cooperatives inform the public in general –young people and opinion creators in particular– about the nature and benefits of cooperativism.|
|6. Cooperationn among Cooperatives|
|Cooperatives serve their members more effectively and strengthen the Cooperative Movement by working together through local, national, regional and international setups.|
|7. Commiment to the Community|
|Cooperatives work in favour of the sustainable development of their community through polices endorsed by their members.|
